In 1987, the federal government mandated training and competency testing of all individuals performing any nurse aide duties in nursing facilities receiving Medicare and Medicaid funding. Working nurse aides must be listed in good standing on the New York State (NYS) Nursing Home Aide Registry (NAR). The New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) has contracted with Prometric Inc. to develop and administer the NYS Nursing Home Nurse Aide Competency Exam (CNA exam) and manage the NAR.
